And now we’re halfway through, okay not quite half way, but getting there. Stay with me and we’ll soon have at least one book or movie for every state! Maybe later I’ll go through and work more on the ‘Teen/Adult Movies’, but then again, maybe not. 🙂 Have fun with this set of books and movies.
Alright, you know the drill, or maybe you don’t. Anyway, it’s easy, each state has a category for Books, Movies and Teen/Adult Movies listed. Some states don’t have something in every category, so if you have an idea for an appropriate item, let me know! Amazon links have been provided for your convenience, but libraries work really well too!
Recently we have ‘Flipped to Fun-Schooling’ and wow, I love the freedom we have! However, while using Thinking Tree’s USA Geography Journal we ran into a little road block. Nothing big, but they have an awesome page for recording information about a book or movie based in the state that you’re studying. You’d be amazed how many sites have almost what I wanted, but not quite. They would have books or movies for teens or adults instead of elementary/middle age, or they have ones that are great for little guys! Or some had too many non-fiction titles while I was hoping for things like ‘Because of Winn-Dixie‘. All that to say, I have compiled a list of books and movies that I believe are great for 3rd-5th grade in reading level and content, most being appropriate for younger ears (we do audio books all the time!) and wouldn’t be completely boring for older kids either. That being said, I have not read every book on the list, though I have read most of them! Nor have I watched every movie and some I watched way back when I was a kid and didn’t catch everything that maybe as a parent I wouldn’t be too keen on now for my kids. I hope that this is a helpful resource for you and please let me know if you have any other ideas for the list, especially those states that are slender in content!
If you’re curious about what in the world Fun-Schooling is, please check out The Thinking Tree Branch…a Sarah Approved site! Sarah is the main author and creator of the Thinking Tree materials and is active on the FB page ‘Fun-schooling with Thinking Tree‘, she’s one of those people who you just feel like you’re friends with even though you’ve never actually talked with her. I love that the materials can really fit any homeschool, co-op, full or partial curriculum or just a public school kid who wants ‘extra’.
Trying to figure out how to organize I was going over too many options, so I did simple. Alphabetical order, five states to a page and a reference page for other helpful sites!
I will link the list below to the page…hopefully it won’t be too long before they’re all done!
Hope you have fun looking through all the titles here! There are links for your convenience, via Amazon Affliates, where I get a percentage and it costs you nothing! However, I would encourage you to look at your local library first unless you know you’ll just love the book, or need it to finish collecting a series!
